Space Shuttle Atlantis Launch

I didn't know about the launch until I got on the ship, an hour before the launch. I didn't have my zoom lenses with me. You're looking at a shot from my Canon EF 50mm f/1.4.

I met this guy practicing flair-bartending in Beijing. He's from the south and traveled thousands of miles to Beijing, to learn the tricks of flare bartending, only because there is a famous "master" in the city. I didn't get to meet the master (I was with my father in the hospital most of the time), but had chances to talk to the apprentice a few times.

Beijing is a city that is booming like crazy. What's happening there gives you one of the greatest examples of urbanization. People from other, mostly rural places are drawn to the city, seeking a better life. They come to Beijing to be a waiter, a masseuse, a construction worker, a cleaner, a bartender...often starting with no place to stay, with very little to spend, but all have a dream...

This guy came here, staying at the master's apartment, paying to learn, paying to stay...it had been a few months, he's hoping to start to work at the bar soon...

I wish I had more time to record his life in Beijing more detailed and fuller in scope. One day I'll start a project recording the lives of those dreamers there...

My dad passed away

My dad passed away on July 23, 2007. I was fortunate enough to be with him in the hospital for three weeks in June. I came back to the States then went to Beijing again, one day before He passed. He was 73.

I haven't posted photos for quite some time - just couldn't do anything these days. I think I'm better now.

I went to the Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania this Sunday. This is one of the images I came up with. Longwood offers 1,050 acres of gardens, woodlands, and meadows; 20 outdoor gardens; 20 indoor gardens within 4 acres of heated greenhouses; and 11,000 different types of plants. It's a great place for plant lovers and photographers. I saw so many people with serious camera and lenses around the gardens.

Versailles image again. Versailles is such a great "playground" for studying forms, composition, lighting. This one was exposed in the late afternoon of a bright day in April. (The time shown in EXIF below was set to be the US Eastern Time, 6 hours behind Paris Time.)

This was shot three years ago using a 3.2-mega-pixel compact point-and-shoot camera. The light source was tungsten, actually some household light bulb, with a very simple setup. I liked it then. I think I still like it now.
